TiMBa - Tablelands Integrated Mountain Bike Alliance

Tablelands Futures Corporation and it's sub-committee, the Tablelands Integrated Mountain Bike Alliance (TiMBa) have a vision and a plan to make Tropical North Queensland the premier mountain bike destination in Australia and an internationally recognised world class facility.

The plan is to develop a series of mountain bike trails - generally looping out-and-back - centered on existing communities across the Tablelands (Hubs). Additional trails will link (Links) one community centre to another across the Tablelands and down to coastal centres. As well as proposed purpose designed and built new trails (to world standards), in particular, new loop trails will be constructed with varying grades of difficulty to provide trails to meet all tastes and talents. Additionally, there are already hundreds of kilometres of trails in existence and these will require mapping and remedial work (grooming), again to meet international mountain bike trail standards. A number of these trails will also be multi-purpose, accommodating not only mountain biking, but also allow access for walking, nature studies, picnicking, orienteering and others.

Stage 1

Prepare trail design for the Atherton hub development (the first of several such developments across the region) and begin construction of the priority trails in that design.

Funding received under the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) Queensland Regional Development Initiative (QRDI).

Stage 1 Project commenced May 2010, completed December 2010.

Stage 2

Develop the collateral to promote the Atherton Tableland as a cycling destination by mapping low-traffic routes between townships, including forestry roads, and presenting the information on the internet. Assist small businesses to become ‘bike friendly’ with information and training. The designated trails target the tourism industry, increasing length of visitor stays, food trails, accommodation, cultural/heritage, environmental and historical sites exploration eg. mining history, as well as a range of general cycling purposes.

Funding received under the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) Queensland Regional Development Initiative (QRDI).

Stage 2 Project currently in progress.
