The Atherton Tablelands (Cairns Highlands) is situated west of Cairns and Douglas, north west from the Johnstone and Cardwell, north of Etheridge, east of Carpentaria and south of Cook Shires. Its elevation provides a natural cooler and less humid climate than the neighbouring coastal and inland Shires.

Covering 64,9982 kilometres the Atherton Tablelands is made up of the following four Shires: Atherton, Eacham, Herberton, and Mareeba.

Covering 6232 kilometres, the Atherton Shire is bordered by Eacham, Herberton and Mareeba shires and Cairns City. Atherton is the smallest shire within the FNQSD by land mass but the second most densely populated.

Covering 1,1272 kilometres, the Eacham Shire is bordered by Atherton, Herberton and Johnstone shires and Cairns City and is home to 6,318 people. Eacham is also base to the Dairy industry for Far North Queensland with its hub at Malanda.
