Atherton Tablelands - Regional Economic Profiles

 
   

The Atherton Tablelands (Cairns Highlands) is situated west of Cairns and Douglas, north west from the Johnstone and Cardwell, north of Etheridge, east of Carpentaria and south of Cook Districts. Its elevation provides a natural cooler and less humid climate than the neighbouring coastal and inland Districts.

Covering 64,9982 kilometres the Atherton Tablelands is made up of the following four Districts: Atherton, Eacham, Herberton, and Mareeba.

Atherton District

Covering 6232 kilometres, the Atherton District is bordered by Eacham, Herberton and Mareeba Districts and Cairns City. Atherton is the smallest District within the FNQSD by land mass but the second most densely populated.

Covering 1,1272 kilometres, the Eacham District is bordered by Atherton, Herberton and Johnstone Districts and Cairns City and is home to 6,318 people. Eacham is also base to the Dairy industry for Far North Queensland with its hub at Malanda.
